Hard tissue grafting is also known as bone grafting. This is a surgical procedure that is designed to restore missing bone mass, typically to enable the jaw to support dental implants. When you suffer tooth loss, your jawbone loses stimulation, which results in the loss of bone mass. Your jaw becomes weaker and begins to change shape. A bone graft involves transplanting tissue harvested from your own body or a tissue bank to the weak areas of your jaw. This helps to restore height, width, and mass to the jaw so that your implants can integrate properly into the bone.

Types of Hard Tissue Grafts


There are a few different types of bone grafts that may be performed. Before implant surgery, you undergo a consultation, during which we assess your candidacy for dental implants. This includes checking the condition of your jawbone to ensure it is strong enough for implants. If not, we go over the options for bone grafting and help to determine the best type to meet your needs.
•  Autograft. An autograft uses tissue from your own body. By using your tissue, there is no risk for disease transmission or graft rejection.
•  Allograft. An allograft uses donor tissue from a tissue bank. The tissue is screened thoroughly to reduce the risk of complications. Without the need to harvest your tissue, there is no need for an additional surgical site.
•  Xenograft. A xenograft uses tissue from a non-human source, typically bovine. The bone tissue is processed at high temperatures, rendering it safe for use. This type of graft may be used when a larger amount of bone tissue is needed. Like an allograft, there is no need for an additional surgical site.
•  Alloplast. An alloplast involves the use of a synthetic grafting material, such as bone morphogenic protein.

Soft Tissue Grafting


Soft tissue grafting is a procedure that is performed to restore a healthy, natural gumline after gum recession. Gum recession can occur for many reasons. One of the leading causes is gum disease, which results in a bacterial infection. The bacteria irritate and inflame the gums, causing pockets to form between the tissue and the teeth. The pockets continue to grow deeper the longer the condition goes without treatment, and the infected tissue eventually begins to die off. When your gums recede, your teeth begin to appear longer. They are more susceptible to cavities. You may suffer sensitivity and may even begin to feel loose. With a soft tissue graft, we can help to restore your natural gumline, improving not only your oral health but the appearance of your smile as well.

Types of Soft Tissue Grafts


There are a few different types of soft tissue grafts. During your initial consultation, we can help to determine the best type to meet your specific needs.
•  Connective tissue graft. A connective tissue graft uses tissue taken from under a small incision created in the roof of your mouth. This type of graft is generally used when root coverage is required.
•  Free gingival graft. A free gingival graft uses tissue taken directly from the roof of your mouth. This leaves a larger, open wound. This type of graft may be recommended when you need keratinized tissue.
•  Pedicle graft. A pedicle graft uses surrounding gum tissue. Incisions are made in your gums, allowing us to rearrange the gums to cover the affected teeth. This type of graft enables your blood vessels to remain intact, which can help to reduce recovery time.
