Dental implants are a widespread solution for individuals who have lost one or more teeth due to decay, injury, or other reasons. They are an excellent alternative to dentures and bridges because they provide a permanent, long-lasting solution that looks and feels like natural teeth. Although the treatment is widespread, many patients still have questions regarding the dental implant placement procedure, who is a good candidate for implants, and what to expect during the recovery period.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial teeth surgically implanted into the jawbone to replace the missing tooth root. The implants are made of titanium and other materials compatible with the human body. Once placed, it fuses with the bone in the jaw to provide a strong foundation for the replacement tooth.

Dental Implant Placement Procedure

The dental implant placement procedure typically involves several steps. The first step is to evaluate the oral health of the patient to determine if they are a good candidate. This may involve x-rays, CT scans, and other imaging tests to assess the health of the jawbone and surrounding tissues. Once determined that the patient is a good candidate, the next step is to prepare the jawbone by grafting or other procedures to ensure the jawbone is strong enough to support the implant.

After the jawbone is prepared, the implant is placed into the bone. This is typically done under local anesthesia or conscious sedation to ensure the patient is comfortable throughout the procedure. Once the implant is in place, a temporary crown or bridge may be placed to protect it while it heals. Over the next several weeks or months, the implant will fuse with the bone in the jaw, a process known as osseointegration. Once the implant has fully fused with the bone, a permanent crown or bridge can be placed on top of the implant to replace the missing tooth.

Am I a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Not everyone is a good candidate for dental implants. To be a candidate, you must have healthy gums and adequate jawbone to support the implant. If you have gum disease or have lost bone in your jaw, you may need to undergo additional procedures to prepare for implants. It is also important to have good overall health to ensure you can tolerate the procedure and recover properly. Patients who smoke or have certain medical conditions may not be good implant candidates.
