Will your child develop pacifier teeth

Posted on 8/8/2022 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
Will your child develop pacifier teethPacifiers negatively affect the growth and development of a child's teeth. Pacifiers and thumb sucking affect the mouth's growth and the teeth's alignment. It also affects the growth of the roof of the mouth. We will discuss the effects of pacifiers on the child's dental health.

What are pacifiers

A pacifier is a substitute made of rubber, silicone, or plastic. It is given to children between feeding sessions to quiet them from distress by sucking on them. Pacifiers have three different parts. The handle, mouth shield, and the elongated teat. The mouth shield deters the swallowing of the pacifier when the child is sucking it and reduces the chances of choking.

Role of pacifiers

Pacifiers can be crucial to kids and parents. They help calm a kid, making the parent more comfortable and at ease. They help reduce the pain that a nursing infant feels. The chances of sudden infant death syndrome are significantly reduced. Additionally, they help shorten infants' stay in incubators and are released from the hospital sooner.

Pacifier effects

Some doctors indicate that using pacifiers is not ideal for their health. They argue that introducing pacifiers in the child's first month is not advisable as it may lead to nipple confusion between breastfeeding and the use of the pacifier, making it ineffective to suckle. Pacifiers can also increase the chances of getting ear infections. However, babies who passively use pacifiers and suck them have a lower chance of developing dental problems than those who use them aggressively.

Offering care

Kids usually stop sucking between the age of two and four. Between this times, the permanent teeth are usually ready to erupt. Dentists can help by providing devices that can stop the habit. Ask for additional advice from our dentist. Call us and schedule an appointment today.
