Is Drinking Huge Quantities of Water Harmful to My Oral Health?
Posted on 8/22/2022 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
No. The contrary is true. Drinking sufficient water goes a long way in ensuring your body is hydrated, fueling saliva in your mouth. Sufficient saliva production in the mouth means no lousy odor or bacteria invasion, which increases the risk of contracting oral complications.
When you have a dry mouth, bacteria find a conducive environment to work on producing acids as by-products. In turn, the acids eat up the enamel, which is the outer cover of your teeth, exposing the inner tissues to agents of oral diseases. Saliva washes away food remains and the bacteria the teeth harbored and eliminates chances of plaque buildup. When plaque builds up, they accumulate around the gumline producing toxins that lead to gum inflammations and bleeding. Additionally, saliva contains minerals such as calcium and phosphate that strengthen the enamel rebuilding.
Water Helps in Remineralization
Your teeth' enamel is eroded naturally by the foods or bacteria in the mouth. Erosion is a continuous process that, when not handled, leads to complete damage to the teeth' structure. Drinking a lot of water enhances remineralization, which is the restoration process of your enamel with minerals and fluoride compounds. However, our dentist advises drinking tap or mineral water as they contain the necessary elements that strengthen the teeth' enamel rather than bottled water.
Water Lowers Mouth Ph.
Your mouth pH fluctuates depending on the foodstuffs and drinks you take. A neutral pH of about 7.0 is recommended for your mouth. However, the intake of acidic foods and drinks means your pH rises significantly, providing the bacteria with a conducive environment to invade your teeth. Drinking a lot of water lowers the pH levels to a neutral position. Please visit our offices for more information on the beneficial health impacts of drinking water.
