Baby Teething Comfort Tips

Posted on 12/10/2021 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
Baby Teething Comfort TipsBaby teeth develop even before your child is born, but they remain under their gums for a few months after birth. This is mostly for about their first six months, at which point the teeth will start protruding from underneath their gums. This process when the teeth start emerging and being visible is called teething. The process continues until all the primary teeth have emerged, stopping when are around three years old. Your child's gums can become reddish in color, sore, and tender to touch. When your child is teething, you may have noticed some behavioral changes such as being fussy and irritable, gnawing at hard objects, trouble sleeping, and poor appetite. Teething is a natural stage of the growth process, but you can follow some tips to help your child handle this challenging stage.

Give your child something cold

When you give your child something cold to put in their mouths, it will assist in soothing the tenderness that comes during the teething stage. Make sure to avoid items with extremely cold temperatures because they can cause more damage to your child's teeth. The best things you can give your child include a rubber teething ring, a wet washcloth, and a cold pacifier.

Give your child soft foods

Depending on the age of your child, they may already have started eating soft foods. Older toddlers' loss of appetite can be concerning and softer foods can help ignite their appetite. Try foods such as cold yogurt, applesauce, and smoothies can be a great way in ensuring that your child gets something to eat during their teething process.

Massaging your child's gums

Massaging your child's gums can help soothe the tenderness. Run a finger through your child's gums. You can also use a gauze pad or a washcloth.
