The procedure is done by removing enamel and sculpting your teeth to a perfect shape. At ZenTech Dentistry, Dr. Frank Sioda and Dr. Sioda offer cosmetic contouring to give you a straight and even smile.
However, before you jump to get this procedure, there are a few things that you need to know:
It Can Result in Tooth Sensitivity
Shaving off some of the enamel on your teeth is not a dangerous process. However, for some people, it can result in tooth sensitivity. At ZenTech Dentistry, we offer advice on how you can take care of your newly contoured teeth and manage sensitivity.
By not chewing on abrasive and hard substances and following our advice, we can avoid further enamel erosion and preserve the health and aesthetics of your teeth.
It Can Repair Minor Cosmetic Defects
The main limitation of this procedure is that it is only effective for fixing minor cosmetic problems like misshapen or slightly long teeth. That is because the average thickness of your tooth enamel is only 2.58 millimeter. Obviously, we cannot remove all of the enamel so we are limited on how much tooth structure can be removed and reshaped.
If you have very crooked or misshapen teeth, cosmetic contouring may not be the best procedure for you.
It Can Cause Tooth Damage
If your enamel is very thin, this procedure may not be for you. That is because removing too much enamel can lead to teeth breakage. We also do not want to remove all your enamel and leave your dentin exposed to infections.
Is Cosmetic Contouring Right For You?
Cosmetic contouring is a good option for people who have very mild cosmetic dental problems. If you are generally satisfied with your smile but do not mind slightly shorter or more even-sized teeth, then we can recommend this procedure for you.
However, keep in mind that teeth that are very crooked may require other interventions like veneers or even orthodontic treatment. In addition, cosmetic contouring cannot whiten discolored teeth so it is not a substitute for teeth whitening, bonding, or veneers.
At ZenTech Dentistry, we are dedicated to providing with you all the information needed about a process so that you can make an informed decision. If you want to understand more about enameloplasty, do not hesitate to contact us at (503) 765-9699.
