How to Improve Your Brushing Technique

Posted on 3/15/2020 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
How to Improve Your Brushing TechniqueWhen you brush your teeth, you scrub away the bacteria in your mouth. Brushing your teeth regularly is an important part of your dental care routine.

The bacteria in your mouth can cause tooth decay and gum disease if it isn't scrubbed away. If you go a long time without brushing, you may also experience gum infection.

Because brushing teeth is so important, it's also important to have a good brushing technique. Even if you brush when you're supposed to, you may not be getting all the bacteria in your mouth. If bacteria are left over after brushing, it has a chance to harden. This hardened substance is known as plaque. When bacteria turn to plaque, you can't scrub it away with a toothbrush. This is why it's important that you have proper brushing technique.

Tips for Brushing Your Teeth

One problem we often see is people missing parts of their mouth when they brush. If you want to make sure you brush everywhere, it's necessary to follow a plan. For most people, starting with the back molars and making their way around is good enough. If you follow this routine every time you brush, you'll be able to get all the right places.

Another tip when brushing is to keep your brush at a 45-degree angle. Brushing isn't only for your teeth. Bacteria can grow on your gums too. By keeping your brush at a 45-degree angle, you're able to brush your gums and teeth thoroughly. To get the best clean, spend 2 minutes in total brushing your teeth.

Getting used to a new brushing routine may be hard, but your teeth will thank you. Following these brushing tips will help you avoid tooth decay and gum disease. If you need any more tips on your dental care routine, please give our office a call.
