Managing Recurrent Cavities Can Be Done with Our Help

Posted on 8/25/2019 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
Managing Recurrent Cavities Can Be Done with Our HelpRecurrent cavities are a type of tooth decay that occurs underneath existing dental restorations. This may include crowns, fillings, or dental onlays.

Recurrent cavities can be caused by poor oral hygiene, or if your tooth develops micro leakage, bacteria can speak past the restoration to affect the tooth. Fortunately, there are ways that our office can help you to manage and treat them.

What Can We Do for Your Recurrent Cavities?

If you suspect that your previously treated cavity might have a problem, it is important to get to our office for an exam. Some recurrent cavities can be diagnosed with a visual exam, as they are obvious even to the naked eye. Your tooth may look discolored, or our dental explorer tool can detect softening of the tooth. When probed, the instrument will stick to the tooth, which is a major indication to us that a cavity is present.

To better understand the scope of the problem, a dental x-ray may be required. X-rays can highlight cavities that are under the surface of the teeth. They are especially useful to detect recurrent cavities that may be hidden underneath a restoration or wedged been the teeth. We can show you the dark spots on your images that indicate where a cavity is present.

The exact treatment for your recurrent cavity will depend on the severity of the problem and the state of the existing restoration. If the decay has traversed through the tooth and now affects the pulp, you might need a root canal before a new filling, crown, inlay, or onlay is placed. Teeth that severely decayed may not be saved, and in this situation, extraction might be recommended.

If you are suffering from recurrent cavities, it is important to contact our office right away. Getting in for an appointment quickly could mean the difference between saving and losing your tooth.
