Consequences of Untreated Dry Mouth

Posted on 6/15/2019 by Dr. Frank K. Sioda
Consequences of Untreated Dry MouthXerostomia (a.k.a. dry mouth) is a condition in which your mouth's salivary glands aren't manufacturing enough saliva to keep your mouth moist. This can make you feel uncomfortable and it can also leave you searching for something to drink or some other way to keep your mouth moist.

Causes of a dry Mouth

There are many reasons why you may be suffering from a dry mouth. Things like cavities, yeast infections, and chapped lips are common causes. However, you may have burning mouth syndrome, which happens when your mouth either continually or recurrently burns without any obvious indication as to why. It's also possible that you have Sjogren's Syndrome, which is an immune system disorder.

What Happens When a Dry Mouth Goes Untreated

Regardless of why you have a dry mouth, it's important for you to make sure to seek treatment. You don't want your dry mouth to be left untreated for any amount of time. When it doesn't get treated right away, it can result in some serious health issues.

Not only can your teeth start to decay, but you can also develop gum (a.k.a. periodontal) disease, which can lead to a whole host of other issues, including red, swollen gums that bleed easily. When this is left untreated you may start to experience your gums pulling away from your teeth, causing them to become loose or even start to fall out.

Treating Dry Mouth

Clearly, it's in your best interest to treat your dry mouth. Most of this you can do on your own simply by making some conscious choices like chewing sugar-free gum, sucking on sugar-free hard candy, or sipping on water throughout the day. You should also stop smoking and chewing tobacco and limit the amount of caffeine you drink. Additionally, you shouldn't use any mouthwash containing alcohol.
