3 Signs of Infections after Tooth Extraction

Unfortunately, some factors, such as severe tooth decay, tooth impaction, teeth crowding, and gum disease, can increase the chances of tooth extraction. While tooth removal is safe, complications can happen after the procedure.

Infections are the most common side effects following tooth extraction. In most cases, infections after tooth extraction occur due to poor oral care. If you neglect good oral hygiene, the blood clot will likely dislodge, allowing bacteria to enter the empty spaces. When the bacteria accumulate, they will likely cause painful infections. Here are 3 signs you might be having infections after tooth extraction:

Persistent Pain

Pain is normal after tooth extraction. In most cases, it occurs when the anesthesia wears off. However, the pain should last between 2-4 days. If the pain persists, you may be having infections. You may also experience swelling and redness of the gums, which can make activities such as eating difficult.

Prolonged Bleeding

Bleeding after tooth extraction does not always indicate infections. However, the bleeding should last up to 24 hours. A dentist usually places a gauze pad on the extraction site to stop bleeding. This also helps the blood clot to form. When the bleeding becomes excess or goes beyond 2 days, it may mean the absence of blood clots, which may result from infections.

A Bad Taste in the Mouth

Sometimes, bleeding after tooth extraction may cause a bad taste in the mouth. Nevertheless, if the bleeding stops and the bad taste is not clear, it may be a sign of infection. Infections occur when bacteria penetrate the extraction site, causing pus formation. Pus consists of bacteria and debris, which are a source of a bad taste. If left untreated, the infections can lead to sepsis, a life-threatening condition that requires emergency dental care. Contact our dental care team if you experience any of the signs of infections after teeth removal.
